To ensure that the community can secure an area of the site for enhanced well-being and community ownership.

About

This has been subject to much discussion and debate about alternative use for the former colliery since its closure. As a community this continues to be a topic of discussion, as was evident in what you told us – ‘Ynysybwl has a fantastic community spirit, but needs a centre - somewhere for everyone to come together, especially young people.’ and suggested the Lady Windsor Colliery site.’

We have been actively working on this and have:

•           Held regular meetings with RCTCBC negotiating a Community Asset Transfer - we continue to work on securing part of the site to belong to the community for ever.

•           RCTCBC have agreed to work with us in securing part of the site and need a detailed proposal.

•           We have undertaken site studies around the viability of access to the lower plateau along the Lady Windsor Trail – the studies have shown a basic starting cost of £150,000 to ensure road access to the part of the site on offer from RCT site.

With the numerous unknowns around contamination on the site it was determined that it would be too costly and not value for money for a small charity such as YRP to continue with the concept of a building at this part of the site. We have not given up and started to explore the concept of a nature reserve.

•           We secured £25,000 from Rural Development Programme, (funded Merthyr Tydfil CBC and RCTCBC RDP fund) to undertake a study looking to create a natural green space that acts as a natural drainage for runoff water – creating small ponds.

Next steps – Consultation with community, depending on RCT’s plans.
